Sea Glass Art Nova Scotia

There are several reasons why the hunt is so important to the sea glass seeker. Some find their Zen moments in the solitude and beauty of the hunt. Some collect to add color to their lives.
The history, mystery, and discovery of sea glass are also strong forces that draw collectors to shorelines around the world, looking for these pieces of physically and chemically weathered frosted glass.

Sea Glass, The Snow Flakes Of The Sea

Sea Glass On The Sea Shore

The ocean is one of my most favorite places in the world to be.  I am lucky enough to live right across the street from one of the most beautiful and foggy shores of Nova Scotia! I spend as much time on the beach as I can, enjoying the view!

Through my travels I have come across thousands of pieces of beautiful sea glass pieces. Blues, Violets, Reds and everything in between. You may find pieces that look similar to each other, but you will never find two sea glass pieces that are exactly the same! Like their shape, no two stories behind the pieces are the same. To me that is amazing, and the thought always makes me smile. Usually I end up lost in a daydream of how each piece came to be.

Genuine Green Sea Glass

After I get these pretty little pieces home, all cleaned up, sorted by color and dabbed with a little coconut oil to make them sparkle. I sort them by size and shape, then I place them onto a crisp, clean background that will be their new home and new story. Will it become part of a mother's pretty blue dress or maybe a bountiful apple tree!

5 Tips To Finding Beautiful Sea Glass

Here Are A Few Of My Best Tips
To Finding The Most Beautiful Sea Glass!

Sea Glass, The Ocean's Snowflake

Some people find sea glass while they are out for a stroll on the beach, others are there with a rake or shovel in hand ready for anything the shoreline may bring.
These little tips will change the way you search for sea glass! They will also change the amount of sea glass that you find each trip! I can bet your bounty will double if you use these tips.

1) Shore Line Matters: Find a shoreline that has rocks the size of your fist or smaller. You don't want to hurt yourself moving big rocks for nothing, not to mention it will tire you out very quickly. Also be sure to cover as much ground as you can. I usually end up with a hole about a foot deep and about 4 feet wide, before I move on to the next pile!
2) Low Tide Is Key: You will find the best pieces of sea glass at low tide. I usually give myself an hour or so before low tide, depending on the amount of rocks on the shore! This gives me plenty of time cover the most ground. Plus the sea glass is so much easier to see when it is still a bit wet. The sun seems to reflect it so much better.
3) Any Weather, Doesn't Matter: Beach combing in the rain is up to you. I personally don't mind it that much.I even search in the winter whenever the tide and weather cooperate with each other, lol. A Sunny day is the best day because it will reflect the darker and more rare colours of sea glass.
4) Tools Are Important: I never go to the beach without my trusty beach bag.
It contains a claw rake, a small plastic rake, a plastic zip lock bag, some small containers to carry while I collect, lip chap, sun block and my sunglasses case! These things are all so very important to a beachcombers tool kit!
5) Choose Your Digging Location Wisely: When I get started, the first thing I look for is peaks of the groups of rocks ending towards the water. I start at the bottom in the smallest rocks and rake them away from the center, working my way to the back of the pile! You will be amazed at the amount you will find this way. Not to mention, the closer you get to the center of the pile, the bigger the sea glass pieces you will find!

Focus Your Time On The Rocks That Are Close In Size To The Size Sea glass You Are Looking To Find. If you spend your time digging through sand sized rocks, you will find very small pieces of sea glass. ***
